Ceremonial laying of the foundation stone

October 8, 2025

Today, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for a new school building took place in the Holešovice district of Prague. In future, this building will house a primary school, an educational lyceum and a technical college for social professions. The construction is being carried out by the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in cooperation with the Prague 7 district, which provided the land for the project and is supporting it in the long term.

The ceremony took place on Rajská Street and was attended by representatives of the church, the municipal district, architects, construction companies, representatives of church schools, and other guests. The symbolic laying of the foundation stone was performed by Pavel Pokorný, synodal senior of the Evangelical Church, together with Jan Čižinský, mayor of Prague 7. The program was moderated by synod curator Jiří Schneider, with musical accompaniment provided by students from the Conservatory of the Evangelical Academy in Olomouc and children from the Bratrská Elementary School, which is located on the neighbouring property.

The new school building should be completed in the summer of 2027 and will offer space for both levels of elementary school, for a pedagogical lyceum, where future teachers and teaching assistants prepare for their professions, and a secondary vocational school whose graduates work in social services, assist the physically and socially disabled, or work in charitable institutions, among other things.

"The Evangelical Church draws on the Gospel. So it seeks the common good and looks to the future. The ambition of our schools is to create space for personal questions and growth. A space where the uniqueness of each person is respected, as well as their place and mission within the human family in this world," said Pavel Pokorný, synodal senior of the Evangelical Church.

The building will be constructed near the Nádraží Holešovice metro station, right next to the existing Bratrská Elementary School. The project will thus directly build on its successful operation, as this elementary school in Prague 7 has built a strong reputation not only as a quality educational institution, but also as a centre of community life and neighbourhood gatherings.

"The Bratrská school has been operating in Prague 7 for 35 years and is our long-term partner in the field of education. Thanks to this joint project, a new school building will be constructed on municipal land, which will enable the popular elementary school, which mainly accepts children from Prague 7, to continue operating, while also offering much-needed places for secondary education. We will set up a kindergarten in the vacated building, which will help us continue to accept all three-year-old children, something we have managed to do for the ninth year in a row this year. In order to continue to do so in the future, we must continue to expand our capacity and increase the number of places for children under the age of three, which is in high demand among parents," said Jan Čižinský, mayor of Prague 7.

The building was designed by a team led by Professor Hana Seho. The building is designed as a sustainable "green" structure in accordance with passive energy standards. It will utilize geothermal energy, efficient rainwater management, and maximum access to daylight and fresh air. Thanks to this, the project has also received support from the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic in the form of a promised subsidy from the Modernization Fund.

The construction costs are expected to be around CZK 400 million. The project has been in preparation for almost ten years, and the school is expected to open its doors to more than 400 pupils and students in September 2027.
